Juventus 1-4 Bayern Munich

Juventus 1-4 Bayern Munich

Heading into the final game in the group stage of the Champions League Juventus needed a win or draw to qualify, while Bayern Munich knew it was win or bust for themselves.

Everything seemed to be going well for Juventus as they started brightly and when Trezeguet scored in the 19th minute it looked impossible for Bayern to qualify. However, the Germans fought on and were rewarded with a penalty in the 30th minute. Olic was brought down and Bayern's keeper, Butt, converted the spot kick against Buffon.

The Germans continued to pour forward, knowing that a draw would send them out of the Champions League. Buffon was tested several times and Juventus were pegged back but weathered the storm till half time. Juventus were struggling to build anything through the midfield, constantly handing possession back to Bayern and inviting more pressure. Diego was awful and kept failing to complete passes, much tot he frustration of himself and the Juve fans who made their feeling known.

At half time the ineffectual Del Piero was substituted for Poulsen as Juventus tried to shore things up and releave some of the pressure on the defence. However, Bayern came out even more motivated and determined and it only took them 7 minutes to take the lead through Olic. Now the pressure was on Juventus, who knew a goal would see them through to the knock out stages. Bayern did not sit back and get defensive of their lead.

For the neutral the game was thrilling. For the bayern and Juventus fans it was tense as every permutation was considered every time their team or the opposition went forward. Juventus were still poor and the play kept breaking down in midfield. Diego did not improve and was brought off and another striker, Amauri, was sent on as Juventus went in search of the vital goal.

Both teams had chances but Bayern were playing the better football and Buffon and the defenders were having to through themselves in the way of the Germans as they searched for the killer goal to end the tie. Trezeguet had another chance when Caceres pulled it back for him, but the Frenchman shot wide.

As the time ticked away, Juventus became more desperate for a goal and left themselves exposed at the back. Schweinsteiger's shot was deflected over the bar and from that corner Bayern got their third goal. Poor marking left Van Buyten a free header which Buffon managed to save with his feet, but Gomez reacted quickest and smashed the ball into the net.

Then in injury time the substitute Tymoschuk compounded the misery for Juventus by scoring from 20 yards, leaving Buffon rooted to the spot.

Bayern deserved to go through and Juventus must now pick themselves up and concentrate on the Serie A and Europa League.
